If you are considering extensions, chances are you are not fully satisfied with the length or fullness of your own hair currently. Extensions can give you that instant gratification of the dream hair you desire, and we can set your natural hair up for success to optimize growth while you enjoy your long hair in the meantime.
The care guidelines for hair extensions are simple and all around great practice for hair health in general. By following these guidelines, you not only prolong the life of the extensions, but will consequently improve the health of your natural hair
Regular trims
It’s disheartening to get trims when you are trying to grow your hair. When wearing extensions, at every maintenance appointment we are able to trim your natural hair to keep it strong and healthy without fear of loosing length because we know we are popping the extensions right back in
Coloring less
Specifically highlighting. If you have fine hair now, you may notice your dark roots growing in and sticking out like a sore thumb. But you might find when you have an abundance of thick long blonde hair with extensions, you don’t notice your natural roots as much because you still feel blonde. This will let you go longer in between lightening sessions.
Quality products
Extensions last significantly longer when using high quality products that are designed to hydrate and nourish the hair. Your natural hair will love this too!
Sleeping on silk
Cotton creates friction against your strands, creating tangles that break when brushed out. Silk or satin allows your strands to glide effortlessly through the night so you have less damage control to do in the morning
Braiding hair to bed
Similar to above, braiding or containing your hair in a low ponytail helps keep hair aligned which in turn creates less risk for breakage during morning de-tangling
Less heat
Extensions keep their style for days. Letting you lay off the hot tools.
Less washing
Even if you are an every day washer, it seems like almost instantly you are able to stretch out your washes once extensions are in. The volume the extra hair creates helps you feel less flat and oily. And that natural oil on your scalp helps your natural hair stay moisturized
Oiling the ends
One of the golden rules of hair extensions is to keep them well moisturized. Oiling the ends of your hair daily will not only prolong your extensions but help keep the ends of your own hair healthy too
Extra things you can do with your extensions in to maximize growth
Vitamins
Good hair starts in the inside. While we can’t always change our genetics or change how our hormones are acting, we can support our hair growth with a balanced diet and optimized vitamin profiles for filling in the gaps and giving our hair the best possible chance right from the start. (like these!)
Dry brushing
Exfoliating your scalp with a dry brush daily can do wonders for hair growth. Simply place the brush on your scalp and firmly wiggle back and forth about an inch worth. On the top and sides this is easy, but when you do between your rows, be careful not to rub the brush against the attachment site. Dry brushing will keep your follicles clear of depri and also create blood flow. (a brush I love!)
Massage
Hair follicles receive their nutrients through blood flow. When you massage your scalp, you are essentially giving your hair an extra meal.
Scalp serum
Avoid hair oils on your scalp while your extensions are in. They will cause the beads to slip. But there are water based scalp serums that you can apply daily that don’t need to be washed out and won’t make your hair greasy. (Like this one!)
